Identify
Your Dell Computer

Dell GX-270 and GX-280 Computers have a few obvious differences.
There are a few things that you need to understand before you can accurately identify one computer from another. CPU Socket is the one issue that some people get confused with.

A PGA-478 CPU Uses gold pins to electrically connect the CPU to the motherboard. These pins are fragile and they get bent and break off easily. The PGA-478 CPU Socket has a locking bar clamp (a small wire lever) that opens and closes the pin clamps. THIS CPU IS HELD IN PLACE BY 478 LOCKING PINS IN THE SOCKET CARRIER. TAKE CARE - YOU WILL PROBABLY BREAK A CPU PIN BEFORE YOU BREAK THE MOTHERBOARD CPU SOCKET.

The LGA-775 CPU does not have pins on the CPU. The pins are embedded in the Socket that is mounted to the motherboard. The LGA-775 CPU Retainer is a metal frame that clamps the CPU to the Socket assembly. THE CPU MUST BE ALIGNED PROPERLY - OR YOU WILL BEND/BREAK A PIN IN THE SOCKET CARRIER.

GX-270 CPU Socket - The GX-270 computer has PS2 Style Keyboard and Mouse Ports on the rear Motherboard I/O Plate.
The GX-270 also utilizes a Socket-478 P4 CPU (This is the one with 478 Gold Pins on the underside), the motherboard CPU Socket is also identified with a "478" Printed on the CPU Socket (but you have to take the CPU Heatsink Assembly out to see it).

GX-280 CPU Socket - The GX-280 computers all do not have PS2 Keyboard and Mouse ports. these computers use a USB Mouse and Keyboard.
The GX-280 also utilizes a Socket 775 CPU (this is the one that only has pads on the bottom of the CPU - the pins are in the lg-775 Connector on the motherboard. This conector has a black pressure retainer frame.
