Satellite Networks apply economy of scale
to provide global solutions to global networking problems. Utilization of a Satellite Based Network can
and will give you the ability to reach multiple locations no matter how geographically separated the
locations are. Satellites look down and the Satellite (SATCOM) Terminals look up. This means that
Mountains and other surrounding obstacles may have minimal effect on circuit/link reliability. In fact,
these obstacles may even be able to provide a little visual security by concealing your Terminal Up-Link/Down-Link
Antenna/Dish.
To put this in perspective, say you had
a TV Satellite Receiver Dish, but didn't want it visible from the street (to keep thieves searching the neighborhood
from noticing it and marking your home for future plundering. All you would need to do is to locate the dish
somewhere inside your property, mounted on the edge of a south-facing building that gives it (the Dish) an
un-obstructed view to the southern sky. Naturally the Dish would have to be able to see the TV Satellite (But this
is just a matter of Orientation).
Satellite Networks can be as small as a pair of
SATCOM Terminals aimed and configuret to work with the same satellite. They can also be a number of SATCOM
Terminals all aimed at the same satellite and confidured to interract as one data group. The actual satellite
network can be as simple or as complicated as is necessary to provide the Data Service needed, where and when
needed. This means You can have say Five SATCOM Terminals Talking and Listening to the satellite, and (say) fifteen
to twenty SATCOM Terminals that only receive the data (This is the way BlockBuster Video Does it - They have
regionalized Data Bases maintained by Servers connected to SATCOM Terminals that continuously transmit the DATA
Base, and update it as needed. These SATCOM Terminals also talk to the Other Talk/Listen Terminals. The majority of Block Buster Video locations only need to listen to
the data base being transmitted. They provide updates to the regional SATCOM Server's via a simple dial-up
connection. Hence, when you travel from say Chicago, Illinois to Phoenix, Arizona - you can still use your
Block Buster Video Membership Card. The Terminal in Phoenix sees your membership data on the data stream
and validaes your membership. When you rent the movie in Phoenix the terminal updates the Regional Server - which
then up-dates the database to reflect the fact that you have a movie checked out. To put this in perspective -
consider this: I rented a movie in Oklahoma City, accidentally left it in my Hotel Room (Hey, I rent suites
with VCR's and DVD Players - doesn't everybody?), then when I returned home and went into my local Block Buster
in Nashville, Tennessee - They Knew!. And to make matters worse - they even arranged for me to pay for the lost
movie, right then and there. Then the data base was updated to show that I had settled my debt to Blockbuster,
the movie rental business is even worse than the IRS! But then isn't Technology Wonderful?
